Castle Road ATHU
Castle Road ATHU is a cross-border Interreg Austria–Hungary project that aims to establish a long-term cooperation between Austrian and Hungarian castles, palaces and historic towns within the framework of the Castle Road. The project strengthens the network by expanding it to Hungary for the first time and by developing innovative cultural tourism products, educational activities and joint marketing initiatives.

Project Objectives
The project aims to strengthen the shared cultural heritage of the Austrian–Hungarian border region by creating sustainable cross-border cooperation between castles, palaces and historic towns. Building on the long-standing success of the Castle Road network, the project connects cultural heritage, tourism, education and regional development to create attractive visitor experiences and increase the international visibility of the region.
Main Activities
During the three-year implementation period, the partners will:
- expand the Castle Road network by integrating Hungarian heritage sites;
- develop joint tourism products and cultural experiences;
- create new family-friendly and educational programmes;
- establish a cross-border Castle Road cycling route;
- organise festivals, cultural events and pilot activities;
- introduce innovative digital visitor experiences, including AI-supported multilingual guiding solutions and virtual reality applications;
- implement joint marketing and communication campaigns to promote the destination internationally;
- strengthen long-term cooperation through a sustainable cross-border partnership.
